Descrizione
The Interateneo Master's Degree Course in Civil Engineering was born in 2009 from the transformation of the Course in Civil Engineering activated in 2006, on the basis of a cultural project in agreement with the University of Naples Federico II. This agreement makes it possible to broaden the spectrum of expertise available on teaching and also to make available to students the research facilities (laboratories) of the University of Naples. In this regard, it should be noted that the educational objectives of the degree course are different from those of the master's degrees of the same class activated at the University of Naples, representing for both universities a completion and complementarity. In fact, the degree course activated at the University of Sannio is characterized by a broader-ranging in-depth study in the sphere of the themes proper to civil engineering, while at the Neapolitan university the educational offer is more specific in individual sectors (two different master's degrees for Structures and Geotechnics or for Hydraulic Systems and Transport). This cultural project has gained significant recognition from the social partners interviewed and a high percentage of employment of master's graduates, thanks to the training of very flexible professionals, able to take advantage of job opportunities related to all types of civil engineering works and services. Such versatility is particularly important in times of labor market crisis, in which, on the contrary, excessive specialization and sectorization can be an obstacle. The same consideration applies in the training of coordinating and managerial figures (especially in local authorities and small companies/enterprises), which require a high professional profile but, at the same time, broad enough to handle all the problems that may arise. Since this is a master's degree, however, a slightly more pronounced connotation has been identified in the area of earthquake engineering, in view of the well-known problems of seismic risk present in Italy, both with regard to new constructions and existing buildings and structures. This need is particularly felt in the Samnite territory, which is, as is well known, at high seismic risk.
The training offer proposes, in the first year, the deepening of the methodological-operational tools of mathematics, as well as skills in the field of hydraulic infrastructures, transportation systems and the government of urban and territorial transformations. It also begins the specialization path in earthquake engineering with the dynamics of structures and masonry construction; this path will be completed in the second year with reinforced concrete and steel construction and soil dynamics. Finally, tools are provided to address design and methodological aspects related to building systems, with a view to an energy-sustainable approach in the construction sector.
Profilo e sbocchi professionali
The profile is that of a civil engineer capable of dealing with issues (design, construction management, testing) related to construction, hydraulic and transportation infrastructure, earthworks, and energy sustainability of buildings. The professional figure trained by the degree course can be responsible/coordinator/manager of firms or private companies in the field of civil engineering, or of technical offices of public administrations (Municipalities, Provinces, Universities, ASL, etc.) operate on their own as a designer, director of works, collaudator, consultant with skills in the field of construction (buildings, bridges, water tanks, etc.), transportation, geotechnical works, with skills also energy sustainability and to the urban insertion of the works.
The professional skills acquired in the degree course concern the design and maintenance of even complex works in the construction, plant and infrastructure sector, and are based on knowledge of the different aspects involved: geotechnical, hydraulic, structural, road and transport networks, urban planning and plant engineering. A special connotation concerns expertise in the area of earthquake engineering. Expertise in each area covers theoretical, application and regulatory approaches that are updated at the national and international level, including on innovative and advanced aspects.
The professional opportunities of master's graduates in civil engineering, on the basis of the professional profile and technical knowledge acquired, consist of engineering design companies and construction and maintenance companies of works, plants and infrastructures, freelance professions, direction and management of construction sites, technical-commercial structures, service companies and agencies, public administrations and local authorities for urban planning and territorial risk management, design, management and control of works and urban and territorial services.
Requisiti di ammissione
Admission is subject to possession of a bachelor's degree and knowledge in some basic and characterizing scientific disciplines of civil engineering, which are to be considered preparatory for the educational activities included in the master's degree program. In addition, knowledge of the English language is required. Possession of these requirements will be ascertained from the personal curriculum based on the credits acquired and the level of knowledge attained in the aforementioned disciplines.
Those who have obtained a degree in Engineering in class L-7 according to DM 270/04 or L-8 according to DM/09 with a grade of not less than 85, or those who have obtained a degree in a different class, with an average of exams not less than 24, are eligible to enroll.
Modalità prova finale
The final examination must verify the proficiency of the topics studied and the ability to express oneself, therefore it consists of the writing and public discussion, in the presence of a specially appointed commission, of an individually written thesis, in which a topic characterizing the professional profile envisaged by the Master's Degree Course has been developed, under the guidance of one or more lecturers. The preparation of the thesis may require the discussion of research or advanced design topics, and thus the need to carry out laboratory experimentation activities, the use of advanced software, and the analysis of international technical literature.
