Vincenzo Pierro was born in Salerno (Italy), July 28,1967. He received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) in physics from the University of Salerno in 1990.
He is an associate professor of Electromagnetic Fields at the University of Sannio (Italy) since 2001, where he has been an assistant professor since 1995. He has been a fellow researcher at the Italian Council of Research (CNR) and the COLUMBUS metrology team of the ESA-ESTEC (Noordwijk, The Netherlands). He has been visiting scientist at the National Astronomical Observatory of Tokyo under the JSPS program of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. He has been collaborating with the TAMA group for the interferometric detection of Gravitational Waves (2005-2006) and the international collaboration LIGO for the interferometric detection of gravitational waves (since 2007). Since 2012 he is a member of the Japanese scientific collaboration KAGRA for the detection of gravitational waves (cryogenic interferometer).
Professor Pierro from 2017 until now is a member of the INFN branch of Napoli and is the head of the INFN Sannio/Salerno unit of the VIRGO project (grant id. VIRGO-SA).
This VIRGO research unit is made up of 14 researchers and is financed by the INFN. ( see website for more information https://www.sa.infn.it/ricerca/virgo.asp)
Prof Pierro is co-author of the first detection paper (event GW150914) done by collaboration LIGO in which has been observed Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Merger. For this research (as a member of the LIGO discovery team), Prof. Pierro has been the recipient of three international awards.
In 2020 Prof. Pierro co-founded the Salerno group of INFN proposing the DARTWARS project.
In 2021 professor Pierro is invited to join the editorial board of the journal "Applied Science" MPDI, in the section dedicated to Laser and Optics. For this journal, he is guest editor of the special issue "Gravitational-Wave Observatory: The Realm of Applied Science"
In 2021 the site "top Italian scientist" includes prof. Pierro in its ranking of the best 200 Italian astrophysicists in the first third of the list.

In 2022 according to prof. J.P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University (https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/4) prof. Pierro is in the top 2% of the world's most-cited authors in 2021.
Prof. Pierro's research interests span the areas of Applied Physics, Electromagnetics, Electrodynamics, Optics, Astrophysics, and Applied Mathematics also in the contest of fundamental Physics problems. He is a member of the Italian Physical Society (SIF).
Prof. Pierro is the author of more than 200 technical papers in the field of applied physics and is a regular referee of APS, IOP, IEEE, and OSA.
Prof. Pierro has been a referee of the ANVUR agency (the national Italian agency for the quality evaluation of research and universities) since 2020.
